Love or hate NYE, it certainly raises emotion, be that good or bad.
Those who love it have a tendency to make those who hate it feel even worse than they already feel by constantly twittering about what they're doing, what a brilliant time they'll have and how dull the non participants are.
New Years Eve is a very difficult day for many. It signifies the end of a year and the passage of time. For those who are alone, it serves to intensify their predicament and does nothing to boost their already failing confidence.
But, enough of the serious side of the fabled NYE celebrations and onto reality.
Who wouldn't want to celebrate the passing of a year and the beginning of a new with folk that they don't particularly like? Who thrives on the pushing and shoving required to get to the bar for that celebratory New Year, triple priced drink? Who envies those who decide to book a table at the restaurant that, on a normal day, serves sub-standard food but, on NYE surpasses itself with platefuls of indescribably poor fayre at extortionate cost? After a 'great' night of celebrating nothing in particular except a sunset and a sunrise, who wouldn't want to endure the trial and tribulation of finding a taxi home with a hugely bumped up price?
Well, that's a no brainer. Not many.
There are those die hards who continue to try to make the non believers think they're missing out by staying at home, in company or alone. They try to insist that NYE is an absolute must on the social calendar and not to partake is bordering on sinfulness. Tragic.
More and more people are daring to voice their complete hatred of NYE and all the nonsense that goes with it. Good stuff and about time the alternative voice was heard. Let it ring out more merrily on high than the ding dong of those Xmas bells.
So, for all those who celebrate NYE with verve and vigour, good luck to you and may the new year shine sympathetically on your bank balance.
For those who despise the whole, overrated affair, good on you and may your wallet be always full and your duvet a welcome retreat.
A happy 2014 to all, however you choose to welcome the New Year, for Auld Lang Syne!
